Diane Dagenais

   Popular Artist

Diane Dagenais a.k.a. DDBella

Born in Gatineau (Quebec) in 1965, this self-taught artist is, from an early age, passionate about the arts. She discovers that singing and writing helps her question and discover her childhood world while in foster homes. Her first writing project is a school play about the sense of family and belonging. During her highschool years, she writes monologues and another play along the same themes and learns to play popular and classical music on the guitar. Member of the student council, she is very involved in the creation of a youth charter of rights. She nearly completes her studies in humanities and literature at Hull CEGEP and later attends University of Ottawa in Sociology and Politics. Given her profound sensitive nature, she feels conflicted while walking by the homeless people on King Edward, whom she does not engage. It reminds her of her life on welfare and foster care. The realities of her childhood catching up with her, she develops a phobia of being in large groups and relinquishes' her dream of a university education. In 1987, she is employed by the federal government in administration for fourteen years, ten of which dealt with international work. Today, she paints and signs her work DDBella. Through her paintings inspired by her life, by the news, by the love of words, music, nature and architecture, she hopes to bring to your home a sense of love, equality, freedom and well being.

Artist Statement

The media influence our evolution as a person and as society living at a much faster pace! That is the energy of these influences, these feelings of people I want to express freely and without judgment in my paintings! All these human energies, I choose to accompany them with music of my choice while painting and think about everything that affects me personally. So if you imagine a peaceful and zen  artist... you pressed the wrong address but still take a few moments and keep reading before deciding to change the page! Indeed, the artistic process that I have chosen is not easy because I paint watching the news and listening to music of my choice! I made that choice to push myself further more to take all the senses and effects of living at a more rapid pace and all its influences! This allows me to convey all the emotions, passions and issues facing us and deal with life choices and decisions both individually and collectively. The rest is well deserved after a session of artistic expression of this kind and the new painting is also quite happy to turn to finally rest on a wall!
